The ever elusive M1. We all dread this symbol when it comes up in a pattern. What to do? Knit in the front and back - or pick up the bar between the stitches - which stitches? - or pick up that bar if you can find it and twist it around? Naah. Those of you who have come into the shop to ask have learned the "lifted increase" - so easy and so beautiful - no hole!
How to make a lifted increase:
On a knit stitch: work into the bar behind the needle on the next stitch to be worked, without working the stitch on the needle and without removing it from the needle, then you can work the next stitch as usual.
On a purl stitch facing you: work into the bar in front of the needle on the next stitch to be worked, without working the stitch on the needle and without removing it from the needle, then you can work the next stitch as usual.
